At the beginning of the month I mentioned at mass that Pope Benedict has named this year, from July to July, the Year of St. Paul, in honor of his 2000 birthday.  Last weekend I introduced one of his major themes for his theology of the liberation of all people.  In Romans 8 he writes a great deal about the contrast between living in the “flesh” and living in the “spirit”.  Only by living in the spirit can we have the liberation and restfulness of the children of God.  The definition I used to describe this restfulness is as follows:  “at ease with oneself—and others, grateful, appreciative, accepting of the ordinary of our lives.”  This week the passage continues with Paul’s words that all creation is awaiting the fullness of redemption in Christ.  He understands well that human existence will always be incomplete—this side of the Kingdom of God.  Our suffering and struggles are not removed by our faith in Christ, but they are given new purpose.  Fr. Karl Rahner, one of our preeminent Catholic theologians describes this incompletion like this:  “the torment of the insufficiency of all things attainable in this world”.  The Good News?  Because of Christ’s victorious resurrection, we have the hope and the promise of Eternal Life.  THEN all will be complete beyond our wildest imaginations!

Special thanks to our fine musicians who continue to lead us in worship all summer long.  Holy Trinity is so blessed to have such fine and dedicated musicians.  The comment I hear most often from visitors is what incredible musicians we have here.  AMEN!  For any of you who have traveled around to other parishes, you know well how blessed we are!  Big thanks to Steve Karakas for leading the 5:30 group, and for Mark Nieves (with Ken Canedo) leading our Sunday morning groups.    I’m grateful for all they do to make our liturgies “work”, and for our many talented volunteers who assist.  WELL DONE!

Summer projects are continuing throughout our facilities.  With our school closed, this is our opportunity to do the kind of maintenance and upgrades that can’t be done with the students on site.  Please excuse the mess in the meantime……  We have shown some new families through the school in anticipation of their enrolling and it looks AWFUL right now.  But, we assure them it will be all spiffed up by the end of next month!  ( I have not seen any “Back to School” sales in the papers yet, so we still have time!)

Blessings to each of you.  Happy Summer!
