As you know, since July, Holy Trinity has partnered with Beaverton Foursquare to distribute emergency food boxes each Thursday. Distribution begins at 9:00am with all 1,200 boxes typically gone by 11:15am. These food boxes are available to anyone who drove up. Many times people would take more than one box so that they could share with family, neighbors or others in need. This was encouraged.
We would also work with other churches, non-profits and the Beaverton School District all of whom would come to take 50, 100, 200 boxes to distribute to those they knew were in need. In short, this program fed thousands of people since it began.
Food for this program came via a Federal program called Farm To Families that began when the pandemic started. The Archdiocese of Portland helped organize this effort throughout member churches.
The local distributor was Pacific Coast Fruit Company who did an excellent job of obtaining, packing and getting the food to the various distribution points. Unfortunately, as I write this article (Sept. 18) the program has not been renewed. Failure to do so will leave a large gap. I expect that local food pantries, including here at Holy Trinity, will see an increase in families coming for food.
Hunger does not care about viruses, fires, heavy smoke, or any other condition. It is persistent and needs our constant attention. Thanks to your incredible and on-going generosity, we will be here. Thank you for your support!
