When we moved to Beaverton a few years ago, my family of five fit comfortably in a three-bedroom house. But when we went into isolation last month, I had a feeling our comfortable house was going to start feeling a little small!
Luckily, my kids are book lovers, so I decided to order some new books to help them calmly pass the time. Little did I know how many people had the same idea!
Our favorite local bookstore was so overwhelmed by orders that a week later, my order was still “pending.” Two weeks later. . .and then three weeks later. . .still “pending.” And all the while, my peaceful book-loving children and my comfortable little house were growing less and less peaceful.
Finally, one particularly loud morning, my patience ran out. I gave up on that local bookshop and turned to another, corporate option. As I went to the website and began searching for the titles in my list, I felt a sour mix of disappointment and defeat.
As I filled my online shopping cart, the children launched themselves across the living room and slammed their faces against a window, hollering to all the world that the mail truck had come. Then they ricocheted across the yard and returned with a small brown package. The books I had given up on had arrived! It changed
everything. In no time at all they were engrossed in new stories and I had the peace and quiet I desired.
It was a small taste of that first Easter. When the tomb of Christ was sealed shut the disciples believed their time with Jesus was over. Everything they had hoped and planned was lost. They gave up on ever receiving the salvation that Jesus had promised.
Imagine their joy when he showed up at their door. Having overcome death, he defeated their despair.
May the Easter story fill us with a joyful confidence in Jesus Christ, the one who delivers on every promise. And may we find in Him the love, the peace, and the hope we have been waiting for.
