I spend a lot of time telling stories of our saints; some very famous, others quite obscure. But one of my favorite lessons to teach comes from the Book of Revelations, Chapter 7. It happens to be our first reading this weekend.
In it, John sees a large number of people who are marked as “the servants of our God.” Right behind them, however, is a “great multitude” of people entering Heaven, coming from every ethnicity, language, and nation. These are the saints — all the saints. Francis of Assisi is a face in that crowd. John Paul II is somewhere in there, too. Mother Teresa, Peter and Paul, Jerome and Augustine, Leo the Great and Therese of Lisieux, are in it.
And so are you.
Today seems like a good day to remember that God has gifted us with a great destiny. Through our sacraments, our lives are united with the life of Jesus Christ, linked with his death, and raised up by his resurrection.
We are invited and empowered to be more than mediocre, just like the great saints we have known. The power of God did big things with them — and is ready to do something big with us, with you, next.
Happy All Saints, you wonderful saints-in-training!
