Last week I told you to
pay attention. Did you? Did you hear today’s Gospel? Jesus fed 5,000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. Make no mistake, this was A MIRACLE. I have heard it said that the people in the crowd shared, and no one went hungry. . .bullpucky!
Jesus, the son of God, fed His people, just as today He feeds all of us through the Eucharist. The same Jesus that turned water into the finest wine at the Wedding Feast in Cana, fed his hungry people who came to hear Him speak. He fed them with food to spare, 12 baskets full, one for each of his disciples who wanted to send the crowd away to fend for themselves. This same Jesus makes Himself available to us every time that Mass is celebrated. Shouldn’t we want to be there every time we can make ourselves available?
I wonder if you have noticed that I love our Catholic faith. I would like to suggest that you love it too, but you might need to think about it to figure out why. For each of us the reasons vary. One rule in doing this is not to begin with things we
don’t like. The things we offer up on that accord have NOTHING to do with Jesus. Let that go, at least for answering the question here.
Speaking for myself, the more God reveals Himself to me in the person of Jesus Christ, the more I am consumed by what God wants to offer me, namely His very self. St. Augustine says,
“we eat the Body of Christ to become the Body of Christ.”Now that’s a mystery we all should all spend time considering.
