Have you ever…? Have you ever done something you wish you could
‘take back’? Undo, erase, forget? My answer for this is,
“You betcha!”, with an added,
“Why, did I do that?” and
“What was I thinking?!?” to punctuate the desire.
Now with some things, there are no
’do-overs’. Most painful in these situations are our lost opportunities for excellence, for the loss of doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes, it is the opportunity, God given, to be a part of something life changing, historic, miraculous. Those are the times that, when we choose poorly and blow it, our actions have long lasting consequences, shame, or guilt.
Why do I bring this up? Two reasons. I will give my second answer first. Catholics know that we have a sacramental
‘do over’ called Confession. Even in our worst moments of arrogance and sinfulness, Jesus gives us a way out! Redemption and healing follow. Keep this in mind as I give you my first.
I keep thinking about the US women’s victory in the World Cup, an unexpected and miraculous victory on the soccer field! I continue to be troubled by the distasteful behavior toward our flag by some of our athletes. In years to come, a time may come for some on the team to want a
‘do-over’. It may take time, maturity, old age, life’s difficulties, or death to make that time come.
Let’s pray for our woman’s team in their victory. Let’s also pray that God invites all of us to come to Confession often for the best ‘do over’ available! Have a great week everybody!
