I’m waiting in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He Who is, was, and is to come. Jesus is the greatest of our sacred mysteries, and the season of Advent brings us face to face with this trifold mystery.
St. John, in his Gospel, tells us that
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God” (1:1). Think hard about that as we continue.
“And the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth” (1:14). So the Incarnation is wrapped up in this trilogy as well, God becoming human like you and me.
Foretold in the Old Testament, the indwelling God is proclaimed in the New.
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us’” (MT 1:23). Jesus continues to be present at every Mass in the Eucharist, and to live in our Tabernacles until He comes again at the end of time.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one Who is, Who was and Who is to come, the Almighty” (REV 1:8).
This Advent, let us not be too quick to rush to the culmination of our celebrations. Instead, let’s meditate on the true gift of the season which is Jesus Himself.
Let’s immerse ourselves in the mystery of Christ, using these days of Advent to wait for Christmas in joyful hope.
