I typically receive multiple calls each day from people looking for some type of assistance. Some times we can help, sometimes we cannot. Part of the conversation always involves an understanding of “what happened?”; “how did you get here?”. While I do not keep actual statistics I estimate the number one reason is that someone either had hours reduced or lost their job entirely. I suspect the second most often heard reason is because someone got ill. Could be a spouse, a child, a parent or other relative. In each case someone had to take some time off to help a family member through the illness. This leads to loss of income and, unfortunately, sometimes a loss of a job. As if this does not make things difficult enough, for those who are uninsured, it also can lead to huge medical debt. While assistance is sometimes available, often it is not. I have talked with many where this debt ultimately leads to complete financial instability and potential homelessness. When this happens, recovery is extremely difficult and the trauma to the family takes it toll.
Help for scenarios like this is essential, but I also believe it is important that we look at the underlying cause and take preventative steps where possible. Having basic health insurance would often have prevented, or at least helped, many of these situations. That is why starting in August, as part of our monthly (first Friday of each month) health services program we will have a representative here to help people enroll in the Oregon Health Plan (OHP). OHP’s mission is to “Provide health coverage to low-income individuals and families, making sure they can access basic health care needs”. Having access to health care not only improves the quality of life for participants, but it is shown to actually reduce the overall cost to society. So, not only is it the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do.
Offering access to this coverage is an easy way we can help our local community. If you, or someone you know needs this coverage, please come see us in the Fireside Room the first Friday of the month between 8:30am and 2:00pm. We will be glad to help you.
If you would like to help by volunteering for this monthly event, especially you retired medical professionals, please contact me. I would love to hear from you. Let’s
