Last week I shared a story about how someone we had helped a couple of years ago was now in a position to be able to help others, if even just a little. I closed the article by encouraging each of you to go make a difference in 2021. Today I want to talk about a way I hope to do that myself. For the last six years I have been working with others to create a non-profit that will more holistically address the needs of those within the community that are dealing with the various forms of economic insecurity. I am pleased to say that this non-profit, called theBeaverton Resource Center, will be opening in February, 2021. Founded on the understanding that economic insecurity is often the result of interlaced issues, the Beaverton Resource Center will be a centralized hub for individuals and families living within Beaverton and the surrounding areas to easily find help. Bringing multiple social service organizations together under one umbrella will, we believe, create an environment where comprehensive support can be provided. Some services we will provide directly, others will be obtained through our network of partners. The strength of the Beaverton Resource Center can be broken into three components: 1)A single location for those in need to come to. Our current social service network is strong, but confusing. Knowing where to start is often a difficult barrier that causes many to simply do nothing. 2)A single location for churches, business and organizations to refer people to. Many organizations, including local churches, have no idea how to get people assistance. Now they will. 3)A single place for people and organizations to support. Many want to help, but don’t know what groups or organizations. Staying local is important to some. The Beaverton Resource Center will be focused primarily on Beaverton and surrounding area families, our neighbors. Those needing assistance outside our area of support will be referred elsewhere. The Beaverton Resource Center will be physically located next door at Beaverton Foursquare. We will not be affiliated with any single church or organization, but rather will partner with many. While COVID is limiting some of what we intend to provide, we feel it is important to start now even if in a limited capacity. All non-profits run on two things; volunteers and funding. The Beaverton Resource Center is no different. To learn more about how you can help please go to our website
