Last week, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day. It's interesting that we celebrate with merriment and joy a saint who was dealing with ecological disaster (an infestation of snakes), entrenched social sin (slavery), and his own painful past (victim of kidnapping).
But the glory of his life is the courage with which he faced those problems. Though uncertain of his ability to solve them, he faced his challenges head-on. He trusted that God would provide him with everything he needed to creatively solve the problems he would encounter upon his return to Ireland — and he was right! St. Patrick discovered in nature — the sun, the clover, the wind –- a world overflowing with signs of the love and power of God.
May we be blessed the same reckless faith in a God whose love for us is greater than the problems of today!
I arise today through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
through a belief in the Threeness,
through a confession in the Oneness
of the Creator of creation.—St. Patrick
