Have you ever turned down your mother’s request for help? What was the look on her face? How was her reaction? Did Mary react the same way?
After Jesus initially refuses to help (verse 4), Mary stops talking to him and instead turns around and starts speaking with the servers (verse 5). How does your mother let you know that a “conversation” was over?
Mary doesn’t tell the servers, “Jesus will fix this,” or “My son will take care of this.” Instead she says, “Do whatever he tells you.” She seems to know that he will do what she asked, even though he didn’t want to. What does that tell you about their relationship? Is she used to his obedience? Does he honor her needs?
Jesus seems to be swayed by the words of his mother. Consider the ending of the Hail Mary prayer: “Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us.” What can we tell from this story about Mary’s requests of her son ?
