How long does it take to make a habit? First, a habit comes from something we do recurrently so we just do it. This can be true of anything. Since last weekend, I have been thinking of my Jewish friends. Let’s use them as an example.
Devout Jews keep their sabbath laws, called
keeping Shabbat. Making this an automatic practice takes their consistent and habitual faithfulness so they can just “do it”.
To be
“shormer Shabbat”(observant) takes fitting their life around
Shabbat, not the other way around. Now I have been nagging you about reading the Bible and praying with scripture, nothing near as complicated, and yet I would say it's as important. Becoming a bible reader and pray-er is life changing because it forms who we are.
That is the beauty of the example of
Shabbat, seeing a life conformed to praising God. Isn’t that what bible reading and praying is? In solidarity with the faithful Jews last Saturday keeping
“Shabbat” in Pittsburgh, let us commit to a habitual and consistent habit of prayer that honors God and forms us. May we be so formed that we just “do it”.
For those who lost their lives last Saturday and for their families, we pray to the Lord.+
