Just some guy??? It’s that time of year again. Christmas is no sooner over and we are already to set our sights on Easter. Preparation for sacraments has been well underway since the start of fall, but now it’s becoming serious. We can feel some urgency to our preparation.
That importance exists for Catholics because the change of liturgical seasons lives in all of us, deep in the fiber of our beings, and we can feel the pull from what we celebrate on Sunday. As our parish prepares for first sacraments for some of our members, the rest of us have to remind ourselves what we have said ‘
yes’ to.
I liken it to an experience I had as Youth Minister. I had a young man, let’s call him Frank, who came because his mother made him come. He ‘
frankly’ didn’t want to be there. One evening, frustrated, I asked him why. Exasperated, he said, “All we do is talk about ‘
some guy’!”
I had to think about that for a second. ‘
Some guy’ indeed! But if we don’t know who that guy is, what we do here at church is meaningless. What’s not so good, what we do with our lives is even worse. I like what Bishop Barron says about Jesus. Either He is who He says He is, or He’s a bad man, and each of us has to decide. If He’s God, I have to give my whole life to him.
As we watch those preparing for sacraments, let’s pray for them that they find the Jesus that has called them to do this. Let’s pray that we more deeply find Him too, and say our ’yes’ again with all our hearts! +
