Today is Earth Day and is such a fitting day to give thanks to God for the wonders of his creation! Psalm 148 is one of my favorites as it names various parts of God’s created world and attributes words of praise to them.
Savor these words:
Praise the Lord from the heavens,
Praise him in the heights.
Praise him all his angels.
Praise him, all his host.
Praise him, sun and moon,
Praise him, shining stars.
Praise him highest heavens
And the waters above the heavens.
Praise the Lord from the earth,
Sea creatures and all oceans,
Fire and hail, snow and mist,
Stormy winds that obey his word.
All mountains and hills,
All fruit trees and cedars,
Beasts, wild and tame,
Reptiles and birds on the wing;
Let them praise the name of the Lord
For he alone is exalted.
The splendor of his name
Reaches beyond heaven and earth.
I often add to the psalm other similar phrases as I see blooming flowers (even dandelions); include Sammy by name at the line “beasts, wild and tame”; this morning with the freshness after the early rain I included that as well. Be creative! Give thanks for all we are surrounded with, especially in our gushy, vibrant Oregon springtime!
